I don't know quite how, exactly, to describe this book. I really enjoyed it--I'd pick it up and find myself unable to put it down for hours. The characters are so interesting, and fairly complex, but for much of the book not much is really *happening.* And yet, I didn't mind. It was so fascinating to follow the psychological and emotional events that the quiet plot wasn't at all boring. And then, once in a while, something fairly shocking would happen! I found myself describing the book to my husband as "Odd. But in a good way." Having finished it, I believe that still applies. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
